As a plus three year local (does three years qualify me as a local? Bah, I’m taking that label anyway) I’d like to list some of my favorite places to visit in the area.
What can you say about this immense national park other than it’s of the great beauties of our area. Love to climb around and inside the Hall of Horrors rock formation or take in the sunset shadows at Giant Rocks. Camping can be amazing especially with shooting star shows like the Perseid showers the other night.
Santa Rosa Mountain
Twenty mile stretch up from the loopy Highway 74 and you feel like you’re at the top of the valley with views of the Salton Sea on over to Big Bear. Like to take my bike up snow or shine or both.
Loads of hiking and camping spots. Did Strawberry Junction trail a few months ago and it was an admittedly strenuous climb up with all the overnight gear/food/water, but worth it in the end. Or was it as the ground was very hard to sleep on? Your choice I guess.
Pioneertown to Big Bear Lake
A fun ride that can start at Pappy’s and end by the lake going from the desert scenery to tall pines. Heat to cooler air. Some really nice straightaways to gain maximum speed, ghost rider.
Home of the human wilderbeats (6’7” long haired, bearded freaks who will eat you raw without salt or pepper). Can tell you more later about that flat tire experience. Some wide open spaces in JV for biking and off-roading. They hold the Jeep rock crawling events here.
